Researcher launches group to help detect hidden biases in AI systems

A new initiative led by College of Toronto researcher Parham Aarabi aims to evaluate biases existing in artificial intelligence units as a initially step toward fixing them.

“Every AI technique has some variety of a bias,” suggests Aarabi, an affiliate professor of communications/personal computer engineering in the Edward S. Aarabi is among the the tutorial and industry gurus in the College of Toronto’s HALT AI group, which assessments other organizations’ AI units working with various input sets. HALT AI creates a diversity report – including a diversity chart for important metrics – that demonstrates weaknesses and implies improvements.

“We discovered that most AI groups do not execute genuine quantitative validation of their technique,” Aarabi suggests. “We are in a position to say, for instance, ‘Look, your app is effective eighty for each cent productively on indigenous English speakers, but only 40 for each cent for men and women whose initially language is not English.’”
